Blood of the Phoenix (Su): The phaethon can use her own blood to heal her companions. She must deliberately cause an injury to herself and allow her blood to fall on the wounded character. The amount of damage healed is equal to the injury to the phathon. For example, Shayera sliced her arm with a dagger for 3 points of damage. She allows her blood to fall on Mac who lies dying. Mac is healed of 3 points of damage and is stabilized.
Blades of the Phoenix (Ex): With a snap of its fiery wings, a phaethon can loose a volley of four fiery feathers as a standard action (make an attack roll for each blade). Each fiery pinion does 1d4 points of fire damage. This attack has a range of 180 feet with no range increment. All targets must be within 30 feet of each other. The phaethon can launch only 24 blades in any 24-hour period.
Design Notes: One of my players recently brought a Phaethon character into one of my play by post games and I couldn’t resist the urge to tinker with the character a bit and make her more like Archangel from X-men comics. (Actually she is closer to Angelhawk, the Amalgam Comics fusion of Angel and Hawkman, but I digress). I wanted her to be able to heal others at the cost of her own health and be able to fling blades of fire; similar to how Archangel can fling blades from his wings. The Blades of the the Phoenix ability is simply a re-skinned version of the Manticaore’s ability to fling spikes from its tail.
