I actually demoed the SAGA game at Gen Con that year (and was in GodzillaLance) and had started work on an online version of the mechanics.
The resistance I got demoing wasn’t so much because of cards and such.
1. The setting was fundamentally “Not Dragonlance” to most people.
2. The mechanics actually were pretty cool and was very flexible to interactive storytelling, but that kind of storytelling hadn’t made it into D&D parlance. It tried to reward flexible interpretations on the skill checks.
In the conversations I had with TSR at the time, they had discussed replacement decks for like $10.
