Today I went to Planet Comicon in Kansas City for the first time in years. The last time I was there, it was a much smaller affair. It was in the Overland Park Convention Center at the time, and there wasn’t a lot to see.
With the rise of popularity of Comicons across the world, Planet Comicon has seen much greater interest. The con has moved to a larger venue in Bartle Hall. Certainly, it’s much bigger than I remember.
I’ve been pretty busy of late, so I didn’t get a good chance to check the guest list. Little did I realize that I would run into Dragonlance author Dan Willis! Dan is known for writing The Survivors, as well as several young adult novels. I had an amazing time talking to him.
Dan gave me some great news. He is co-authoring a new series with Tracy Hickman – Dragons of the Confederacy. Details are a little sparse at the moment. I do know that it is a steampunk novel set around the American Civil War. Look for the novel Lincoln’s Wizard sometime in the near future.
I also had the opportunity to meet Josh Blaylock of Devil’s Due Publishing, the company that published the Legend of Huma comic book series. We reminisced some on old times and had a good talk. I even got another copy of the Legend of Huma trade paperback.
I have to give a shout out to my friends in the Musical Blades, a bawdy pirate band from the KC area. If you like good pirate music, you will love these guys.
All in all, it was a fantastic time. I had a blast and hope to go back next year.
