Dragonlance Returning to D&D

30 July 2026 – The D&D Vision Keynote 2027 speech at Gen Con announced (amongst other things) the welcome return of Dragonlance to Dungeons and Dragons.

On stage at ‘The D&D Tower’ in the Indiana Repertory Theater Joe Manganiello introduced a new initiative called D&D Icons. Speaking warmly of his love for Dragonlance, and for Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman in particular, he said they were the first two people he called once he became Icons’ Chief Creative Officer. His wish was for them to “re-establish 40 years of canon and properly relaunch” Dragonlance. Looks like he got his wish.

Tracy came to the stage to give a speech about how happy they were to be bringing Dragonlance back home to D&D, and what the future might hold:

“We are finding new ways to explore the world. To make it richer, deeper and, more importantly, to bring it into your hands as Dungeon Masters and gamers. We want this world to be yours. And it is our gift to you.

We cannot be here forever.

But in giving this gift, this world, to you and putting it in your hands to create, we will know that home will always be there for you.”

If you missed the live announcement you can find it on YouTube here: D&D Vision Keynote 2027

There is not much detail on what the products will be at this point beyond a press release mentioning a TTRPG which will be “the most ambitious Dragonlance volume ever.” D&D said that “Icons will touch everything from setting guides and adventure modules to accessories and beyond, all in close collaboration with the studio.” What are you hoping to see? More novels? New Death Saves apparel? Let us know in the comments.

  1. Well, I guess we will soon see the end of DARK SUN, DRAGONLANCE and GREYHAWK. For the latest I am sorry but a name is no guarantee of success; unfortunately, it is all too often the opposite.
I would also add that the *World of Warcraft* setting is an old, well-worn concept that failed miserably in the past.
One final note regarding the decision to rely on third-party content creators: when a company lacks the ability to properly build an in-house editorial team—something Wizards has demonstrated for decades—the choice to outsource is the logical consequence of a complete failure in management, organization, and strategic planning.
