DLA3e Magic Lexicon

Author’s Note: Prior to Sovereign Press gaining the Dragonlance gaming license for 3.5, the Dragonlance Nexus was working on Dragonlance rules for the D&D game. A small group of us, known as the Conclave of Wizards (consisting of Cam Banks, André La Roche, and myself and advised by Tracy Hickman), put together the initial rules for magic.

The following was our initial lexicon for the DLA3e project, which helped to lay down the foundation of Dragonlance magic in 3rd edition. This is presented as a snapshot of the past, for your enjoyment.

Ambient Magic – Magic present in the world of Krynn and generated by mortals.

Arcane Magic – See Creation Magic.

Bard – Character class that uses the power of Wild Sorcery.

Cleric – Character class that uses the power of Clerical Power.

Clerical Power (Devotion) – Focused Faith Magic. This magic is granted by the gods.

Creation Magic – Magic centered around creative forces and elemental energies. In its ambient form, it is known as Sorcery. In its focused form, it is known as High Sorcery.

Divine Magic – See Faith Magic.

Druid – Character class that uses the power of Clerical Power.

Faith Magic – Magic centered around belief and spirit. In its ambient form, it is referred to as mysticism. In its focused form, it is referred to as Divine or Celestial magic.

Focused Magic – Magic that is refined by the gods and reflected back onto mortals who follow them.

Four Powers – Clerical Powers, High Sorcery, Mysticism, and Wild Sorcery.

High Sorcery – The Focused Creation Magic of Krynn, granted by the gods of magic.

Medallion of Faith – A divine focus for those who use Clerical Power.

Mystic – Character class that uses the power of Mysticism.

Mysticism – The ambient Faith Magic of the world, oftentimes referred to as the Power of the Heart.

Paladin – Character class that uses the power of Clerical Power.

Power of the Heart – See mysticism.

Ranger – Character class that uses the power of Clerical Power.

Sorcerer – Character class that uses the power of Wild Sorcery.

True Healing – Healing powers granted from the gods and used by classes that cast Focused Faith Magic.

Wild Sorcery – The ambient Creation magic of Krynn. Wild sorcery is considered to be wild, as it reflects the state of creation, and the damage done to the world by Chaos and Evil.

Wizard – Character class that uses the power of High Sorcery.

  • Memorable Quotes

The darkness might conquer, but it could never extinguish hope. And though one candle – or many – might flicker and die, new candles would be lit from the old. Thus hope’s flame always burns, lighting the darkness until the coming of day.
