Meggad Horda (Mehg’-gad Hor’-dah) (7/10/359 AD – ?/?/414 AD) was one of the original members of the Midland Guard directly enlisted by Jermon Cavlin after the Days of Darkness. He was born and raised in Sharathen, capital of Drejor, and married to Tremda Wilsks. Tremda committed suicide via poison a few days before the start of the Days of Darkness. Hours before she was seen screaming in public “The Beginning is coming to bring the End!”

In 401 AD the Great Sovereign Lord assigned Horda to be in charge of one of the squads secretly searching for the Volumes of the Prophet. Second Protector Cavlin was unaware of this assignment until he designed to appoint Horda in charge of Montegron’s security detail. When he discovered Horda was missing, Montegron was forced to inform Cavlin of the search for the Volumes.

By some means yet unknown, those loyal to the some of the Elder Dragons began to suspect Montegron’s forces were taking some action against them. A group of hired mercenaries attacked Horda’s troupe when they were following up a false lead in Mauritand. After taking several casualties, a local soldier rode in and surprised the enemy. After helping turn the tide of the battle, Horda invited her to camp with them for several hours. They talked and conversed well, but at no time did Horda let the young woman, Noragaen Falecohvo, find out they were from the Midland Guard. After she went on her way and Horda returned to ZyxZharar empty handed, he submitted Noragaen’s name for entry into the guard. Four months later in 402 AD, he returned to Mauritand and found the Falecohvo Ranch. He personally delivered the invitation and she accepted before they left.

In 410 AD, Horda failed to retrieve one of the Volumes, although whether or not the abandoned cavern truly had ever housed one of the sacred books is highly debatable. As a trap was set off, a woman of “familiar face” pulled his poisoned body out of the collapsing shrine. He was delirious for six weeks before finally regaining his mind in a backwater herbalist shop in the east. The person who saved his life was long since gone. Being the only survivor of his party, he made his slow trek back to the capital.

The Sovereign was so angered by his inability to retrieve the tome that Horda was removed from duty and sent to remedial tasks for the next three years. Upon the completion of his punishment, Horda quit the Guard. He had stated that he quit in order to remove his own shame from the Guard rather than anger at his penance.

After that he had set out to find the woman who had saved his life. Months later his body was found washed ashore near Mah-Jor, Galachot. The body had been exposed to the seawater for weeks, and various fish had fed off of the corpse. His clothes and wedding ring were the final factors in identifying the body. Throughout his time with the Guard, no one had ever seen himself without the ring.

Keskel Holmestorm (Kehsk’-ehl Holm’-storm) (10/20/383 AD – current) is the current mayor of Josal, Mauritand. He was accepted to the position in 415 AD by Losojadan after his name was added onto the list of suggested citizens put together by Josal’s business elite. Keskel is younger brother of Dramin Holmestorm, owner and manager of the Coastal Edge Brewery. Rumor is circulating that Keskel is tiring as his position as mayor and wishes to go back to assisting Dramin in the running of the brewery which is striving to start overseas shipping.

Dramin Holmestorm (Dray’-min Holm’-storm) (8/15/378 AD – current) is the current manager and owner of the Coastal Edge Brewery. His younger brother Keskel is currently the mayor of Josal, but due to Dramin hoping to begin shipping the family brew overseas, Keskel may be resigning from the mayoral position soon in order to assist in Coastal Edge’s growth.

Under Dramin’s control, the brewery has begun selling its product to several customers in the nearby capital Losojadan and to several other of Mauritand’s cities and towns. His success in business has made him the one of the more influential members of Josal’s business elite. When present at meetings, most believe that the elderly Gosma Falecohvo is the only one in town who’s voice carries more weight.

Neumari Hiden (Noo’-mair-ee Hy’-den) (5/26/394 – current) is a lieutenant and second-in-command of the military personnel posted in Gef-throth, Bhadlum. Serving under Dregan Yoheshi, she serves to protect Bhadlum from the raiders to the north.

It has been a long desire of hers to join the Midland Guard, however all of her requests to join had been turned down due a history of striving more for her own benefit rather than the good of the Midlands. To her mind, she thinks that pure determination will eventually allow her into the Guard. She cannot understand that the Guard looks for service for loyalty sake and not for service for promotion. Lieutenant Hiden also has a great deal of suspicion towards Townsman Merius, a minotaur that appeared to turn traitor against his own kind for the good of Gef-throth. Her suspicions are also growing in regards to those in the town who are closest friends with the new Townsman.

Morgram Haspright (More-‘grahm Hasp’-rite) (11/1/260 AD – current) was appointed Grand Servant of the Midland Guard in 385 AD after the original Grand Servant Linillae Asha was slain by dragon of unknown breed during a routine patrol in Diquantany. Morgram’s loyalty to the Midlands and to Montegron was only superceded by his friendship to Second Protector Jermon Cahvin. Morgram was one of the original members of the Midland Guard who joined when Cavlin made his first tour of the Midlands shortly after the Days of Darkness. He also introduced Cavlin to Teransa Hathstone, a woman of local renown in Guiteger. Teransa not only impressed Cavlin enough to be invited into the Guard, but Cavlin were later betrothed and had a child (albeit after Teransa’s demise).

In 406 AD, Morgram received word from his home in Drejor that both of his parents had taken sick in old age. With no other family Morgram resigned his post in order to care for them. His father and mother died in 408 AD and 410 AD respectively. Since then he has not sought to return to the Midland Guard and is, of all things, running a small bookstore.

Upon Morgram Haspright’s retirement, Xaven Mythrilaxe was appointed to the seat of Grand Servant.

Jurana Foles (Jur-ahn’-ah Foles) (2/22/331 AD – 6/21/383 AD) was taken during her younger years by a group of bandits and sold into slavery after her family was killed. She soon wound up working in the manor of Delijol Kamir in Vjenor. When Kamir began to use her to satisfy his own sexual desires, Jurana succeeded in fleeing the manor. But within two months she was captured by Derenta Cavlin, a bounty hunter hired by Kamir. On the trip back to the Kamir Estates Derenta began to fall in love with Jurana, and soon after being returned to her owner, Derenta used almost all of his own money to purchase her for himself. Unlike Delijol, Derenta showed nothing but kindness to her. Soon they were wed and living together in Gef-throth, Bhadlum. She quickly gave birth to their first son, Jermon Cavlin, who might actually had been Kamir’s child. Four years later she gave birth to their second son, Miklam Cavlin.

Jurana was known to have a flighty personality, sometimes rambling off on a stream of consciousness that made no sense. Yet most of the time she caught herself and turned the ramblings into an odd or obscure joke. In truth her suffered from a mild insanity she was usually able to keep hidden or in check.

In 381 AD, Derenta was killed during a raid against the town by minotaurs. Miklam, who had not only inherited Jurana’s mental problems but in whom it had developed much further, tricked Jermon into handing ownership of Jurana to him. It turned out that in all of these years, Derenta had failed to complete the process of granting Jurana her freedom from slavery. Miklam exploited that by giving Jermon their father’s horse for “what was left in the kitchen.” At that time, Jurana was standing in the doorway. When Jermon left to argue his point in front of the town’s Fortmaster, Miklam beat Jurana and then cut off her left leg, which was outside the doorway and not in the kitchen at the time. Her son then took his possessions, including her, and fled Gef-throth.

Over the next two years Jurana was treated far worse than Delijol Kamir had ever treated her. She was regularly abused in just about all fashions until Jermon was finally able to locate the two of them during the Days of Darkness. By this point, her mind had completely rejected the outside world. She was in a mostly catatonic state.

Before Jermon could rescue her, Miklam grabbed Jurana and threw both himself and her into an attacking shadow wight. Both Miklam and Jurana were killed and all memory of the mother and son were wiped from existence.

Gosma Falecohvo (Goez-ma’ Fal’-eh-co’-vo) (11/23/352 AD – current) is the patriarch of the Falecohvo family. Married to Rudaen Falecohvo, he has had three daughters, Hannean, Noragaen, and Chonae. After his father had past on when he was at an early age, Gosma inherited the family horse ranch. Up until his recent retirement, he had done everything possible to strengthen the business and better the breeding stock. Although he is no longer the owner of the ranch, he continues to give the new owner, Hannean, advice everyday in how to care for both the company and the horses. Having been responsible for much of the ranch’s expansion in the last few decades, Gosma is still a very influential man in Josal’s business-based politics. When not relaxing at the ranch, he often can be found in the Josal Meeting House giving advise to other business leaders in what is best for their companies and for the community.

Chonae Falecohvo (Ko’-nae Fal’-eh-co’-vo) (11/12/380 AD – current?) is the youngest of the Falecohvo daughters. Her eldest sister Hannean grew up to become a professional horse breeder, trainer, riding teacher, and owner of the Falecohvo Ranch. Her other sister Noragaen grew up to become the Second Protector of the Midland Guard.

Instead of focusing on the family horse trade, Chonae became trained in the art of swordfighting and she soon proved herself to be as skilled in it as Noragaen. Around the same time that Noragaen joined the local patrols in Mauritand, Chonae decided that she would lead a more interesting life out on the road. At the age of seventeen she left her home to venture where the winds took her. Since then she has not been seen or heard from, although a few rumors heard by Noragaen recently state that she may be alive in the east.

Miklam Cavlin

Miklam Cavlin (Meek’-lahm Cah’-vlin) (3/9/361 AD – 6/21/383 AD) was the younger brother of Jermon Cavlin, although no one remembers him or his horrific actions. Born in the border town of Gef-throth, Bhadlum, Miklam proved to be inadequate in weapons training and therefore did not have the opportunity to garner the same praise his elder brother did. This in combination with a subtly mounting mental instability led him to begin to hate his brother, his parents, and even himself.

Treason Against Family

When Miklam was twenty, his father Derenta was killed in a minotaur raid. Knowing that his mother was originally purchased as a slave in Vjenor, he sought to destroy his own family. As he and his brother were agreeing to how to split their father’s possessions, he tricked Jermon into letting him take ‘what was left in the kitchen’ in return for his father’s horse. Jermon, being of relatively innocent mind and too trusting, agreed. Since there was a legal witness in the room, Miklam exerted his right of ownership upon their mother, Jurana Foles, who was in the kitchen doorway at the time of the agreement. Before Jermon could rectify the situation, Miklam took his things, Jurana included, and ran off. However he did make sure to uphold the agreement in full.

Since Jurana was in the kitchen doorway at the moment the agreement was made, Miklam removed the part of his mother not in the kitchen, namely her left leg. He cut it off while Jermon was arguing his case to the Gef-throth Fortmaster, left it in the house, and fled.

Days of Darkness

For the next two years, Miklam enjoyed tormenting his mother and fleeing from Jermon. By the time the Days of Darkness arrived, Miklam had reduced his mother to a breathing lump of catatonic flesh. When the creatures were attacking the world, trying to destroy everything, Miklam realized that never would the world be more to his liking. He broke away from fighting Jermon, grabbed his mother, and flung both himself and her into a shadow wight. They were both killed and all memory of them wiped from all minds. Jermon, who had been dedicating his life to rescuing his mother and bringing his brother to justice, could no longer remember the reason for any of his actions over the last two years. If it was not for the lucky arrival of Montegron, Jermon himself would had been slain and removed from memory.

Evtra Cavlin

Evtra Cavlin (Ehv’-trah Cah’-vlin) (6/19/400 AD – current) is the son of Jermon Cavlin, founder of the Midland Guard. Before he was born, his mother Teransa Hathstone was pierced by a poison arrow during her wedding. The arrow was believed to had been intended for Lord Sovereign Montegron, but the bakali assassin was killed before it could be questioned. Teransa died instantly, however Montegron’s mages were able to use magics to preserve the eight-month old child inside of her. By some miracle, Evtra was born two weeks later. Although his skin was more sallow than normal, he appeared to be in perfect health. His wife stolen from him, Jermon used all of his resources to raise his son right.

As he grew older, Evtra showed not to have the physique that his father had. Although of wide shoulder and lean body, his coordination was not at a level required to become a soldier. Yet Evtra grew up with a love for the Midlands. Then one day one of his father’s housemaids told him in confidence that she had a talent with a type of magic that she was willing to impart to Evtra, the only price was that the teaching must go on in secret. Evtra agreed and began his studies in mysticism. With this education, Evtra began to learn skepticism in the Lord Sovereign’s rule. After all, was is not his father’s Guard that kept the Midlands safe and not the egotist on the throne?

In his late teens, Evtra was horrified to discover his father dead in his bed one morning shortly after Jermon momentarily showed disappointment in one of the Lord Sovereign’s decisions. Never believing his father died naturally, he escaped from public view immediately after his Jermon’s wake. His current whereabouts is unknown.

There is a possibility that Evtra may have been showing signs of the same subtly building insanity his uncle Miklam suffered from. However since Miklam was killed by a shadow wight, there is no way for anyone, especially Jermon, to recognize the pattern.
