Great podcast! I agree wholeheartedly about kender and gully dwarves, though I can’t vouch for gnomes, having only read the first novel. In it, Tasslehoff and Bupu were some of my favorite characters. I did appreciate the humor Tasslehoff brought to the story, but it didn’t seem to me like it defined his character. Instead, I felt he contrasted nicely with the other heroes’ angst and gave us a taste of the sort of wonderment we might feel in his place. Bupu, meanwhile, hardly even struck me as a comic character, instead being a pitiable figure who was essential in demonstrating that Raistlin might actually have something vaguely resembling a heart. Without her, I would admittedly have much less respect for Raistlin. In conclusion, gully dwarves and kender really made the book for me, and without them, the book would be less than the great thing it is.
