Dragonlance Canticle #57 – Family in Dragonlance

In this episode, Tristan, Trampas, Chuck, and Weldon discuss the role that family plays in the Dragonlance universe.

I’ve just listened to the episode. I’ve not read much beyond the tales of the original heroes, so I’m utterly unfamiliar with their families, but your comments about the girl joining the knightly order at thirteen stuck out to me.
    Why?
Because you considered it a sign of a broken family.
Dragonlance is a world without universal school system that requires at least a decade of attendance, so what do you expect children to do? If they are lucky they get to visit a school (which will almost certainly be less than ten years and thirteen year olds may actually have finished school already), but more likely they are taught the basics by their parents before becoming apprentices to a master and learn a trade.
A quick internet search suggests that historically most apprentices were 14 or younger. Knights would start training at age 7 as page to another family and advance to squire between ages ten to fourteen.
So her staying at home until becoming a squire at 13 is indeed unusual, since she should have moved out for training many years prior, but I guess her family was close enough that they deferred the separation as long as possible.

Great show guys! Love the idea to go to other topics but stay relatively a dragonlance podcast. M. Weiss and Mr. Hickman are iconic staples of dl and are regularly talked about on your cast anyway that it seems natural to report on their released and upcoming project. I also agree that there are enough rpg casts. Love the show!
